Book review: Jimmy Choo Story
I have always been fascinated by the behind the scenes rise of successful business women who run multi million dollar companies. So the incredible rise of Jimmy Choo the hot heel company run by British born Tamara Yeardye intrigued me. In 12 short years Jimmy Choo has the same brand recognition as world-renowned companies like Burberry, which is over 100 years it’s senior. The instant success of Jimmy Choo is uncontested but not without its fair share of drama.
Jimmy Choo the man is the son of a Chinese shoemaker who grew up in Malaysia but decided to take the leap of faith and follow his passion and moved to London to study shoe design. Here he helped many other young inspiring shoe designers raise their profiles and brands working long hours behind the scenes. With this experience he knew he wanted it for himself. Even though his clients included Princess Diana he lacked confidence and business skills. That’s where Tamara comes in.
Tamara is portrayed as a spoilt multimillion dollar heiress who really has no respect for money and has an obsession for fame and fortune. After rehab at 28 years old and a variety of fashion related stints her late father backed her idea to finance and grow Jimmy Choo as a brand. With Jimmy and his niece as the creative force Tamara pushed the business and designs to new heights; the infamous 4-inch heel! Tamara was in charge of public relations and definitely knew how to get her shoes on the right heels.
Personally I didn’t find Tamara’s story inspiring as a business woman in a superficial industry however the read did give me a greater insight to the luxury business world.
