I’ve always taken great interest in the cosmos and the world around me. Observing the outside world with an internal monologue has kept my mind very busy for many years. A lot of my energy is creatively charged and art has proven to be a great release. My physical body has never been short of energy either and competitive sport became my chosen outlet. The physical and mental discipline of basketball was an enjoyable challenge that drew all my interest, focus and attention.
At the age of 13 I threw nearly all my eggs into one basket and injected most of my energy into the pursuit of a sporting career. My passion and dedication to the game provided me with very rewarding opportunities, all of which I am very grateful for. My approached to training and games was in a sense a form of non traditional Yoga. Stretching was always a very important part of my preparation as well as meditation. My best games were always played in the moment, or as they call it in the sporting world… the zone. But over time I began to realise that even the best performance didn’t result in the desired outcome of victory.
After 20 years of vesting most of my energy into basketball I started to feel like something was missing. In August of 2010 after a few years of toying with the idea I made the decision to walk away from the game. Once the ties were cut I felt an amazing sense of relief and a new found freedom. But after a few months there was an overload undirected energy and I started to become unsettled. My interest in the realm of quantum physics and the philosophies of the eastern world kept my mind satisfied and my spirit watered but my physical body was lacking nourishment. No longer was there an outlet to discipline all my physical energy and my mind began to wander and my spirit began to cloud over. I have always been fond of the idea of Yoga but I was never much more than a dabbler. Over time the depths and layers of the practice began unfolding around me and I realised that I had found something that could bring me balance to my body, mind and spirit. The deeper I delve into the practice the more motivated I am to continue on this path of learning.
After speaking to a friend about my growing interest in Yoga he mentioned that a friend of his ran a studio and suggested I look into teacher training. After a visit to the studio and phone conversation to Michelle I committed my intentions to the course without hesitation. Michelle and the girls at Essence have created such a positive environment that you can feel it flowing out of the building when you walk in the door.
